Albuquerque Poet Laureate speaks to Press Women in June

The city’s new poet laureate, Jessica Helen Lopez will speak to Albuquerque Press Women on June 9 at 11:45 a.m. at the MCM Eleganté Hotel at 2020 Menaul NE. Lopez will discuss slam poetry, writing and serving as a member of the writing community. To make a reservation for the lunch, please call 720-7821 or email presswomen@yahoo.com by June 5. Lopez is a nationally recognized award winning slam poet, and self-described radical feminist. Her first book of poems “Always Messing with Them Boys” is on the Southwest Book of the Year reading list and received the New Mexico Press Women Zia Book Award. She is the founder of “La Palabra – The Word is a Women” collection created for and by women. Her work has been anthologized in “A Bigger Boat: The Unlikely Success of the Albuquerque Slam Scene” (UNM Press), “Earth Ships: A New Mecca Poetry Collection” (New Mexico Book Award Finalist), “Tandem List Slam” (San Francisco) and more.

She also teaches Borderland Poetics at UNM through the Chicana Studies Program and is a part time tutor at CNM’s Assistance Studies Program.
