Shaping New Mexico’s Future: Our role as citizens and journalists

Shaping the New Mexico's futureIt’s rare to have an opportunity to stop and think about to the future, but that what New Mexico Press Women will be doing at our annual conference on April 22 and 23.This year we will be meeting at the serene and beautiful Bosque Retreat and Conference Center at 6400 Coors Blvd. NW.

Registration for the full conference is complete, but there is still an opportunity to register for one or more of the panel discussions.

The first panel – Land and Water begins at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, April 23.

Our intent this year is to go beyond the expected, and to talk about issues involving land and water we do not see covered in the main stream media. Our panelists, Laura Paskus from New Mexico in Depth, Anita Miller, land use attorney and Laura McCarthy director of conservation programs for the Nature Conservancy in New Mexico and moderator, journalist and author Sherry Robinson guarantee a lively discussion.

The second panel – Telling the Deeper Truth begins at 10:45 a.m.

Businessman and former democratic gubernatorial candidate Alan Webber along with businesswoman, legislator and former republican candidate for a New Mexico U.S. Senate seat Janice Arnold-Jones and moderator and columnist Merrilee Dannemann will have a fresh take on where the public conversation on current issues should go.

The third panel – Crime and Justice begins at 1:15 p.m.

This deep dive into the unexamined issues in the criminal justice system in New Mexico will offer insight into issues New Mexicans may not have considered. Supreme Court Justice Judith Nakamura, award-winning investigative journalist Peter St. Cyr and moderator and journalist Scott Sandlin from the Albuquerque Journal will find new ways to look at the seldom discussed corners of the New Mexico justice system.
